I had a multi-6 figure sales career, managed our home, cooked, planned fun outings and holidays, and so much more.

But my husband didn’t seem to care, saying things like, “I never asked you to do that,” or “Relax,” or simply ignoring my efforts entirely.

My once charming, playful, and romantic French husband was pulling away, and I had no idea why or what to do.

He became less affectionate, disinterested in conversation, indifferent, and disengaged. 

I tried so hard to please him, had long tearful talks about all I did for us and what I needed from him - things would improve, then we'd go backwards.

In this difficult place lasting a good couple of years, I lost myself.

I became lonely, stressed, and resentful, blaming my husband for my unhappiness, when in truth, I had changed.


My story

2020: I was no longer the woman my husband fell in love with

In my mind I did "everything", but my husband didn't appreciate me

Everything changed February of 2020 on a work trip in NYC - I'll never forget sitting on my hotel bed, overlooking the beautiful city, googling marriage advice.

That’s when I discovered Laura Doyle. Reading her book was a dagger to my heart - I realised my husband's behaviour was in response to me! 

Determined to save our marriage, I applied Laura Doyle's "Six Intimacy Skills", and got intentional with my marriage.

I wasn't the fun, independent woman he fell in love with.

  • "Self care" is about taking responsibility for your own happiness and well-being

  • It’s investing in your mind, body, heart, and soul  with activities that bring you joy, energy, and emotional resilience

Gratitude

  • Express "Gratitude" to better appreciate the positive things your husband does - big or small; express this to him 3 times a day

Receive

  • "Respect" is about honouring your husband as an individual - acknowledging his right to his own thoughts, decisions, and abilities

  • It means listening to him without unsolicited advice, criticism, or dismissal

  • It shows you value his perspective, judgement, and autonomy, building emotional safety and connection

Relinquish Inappropriate Control

  • Relinquishing control is about letting go of the need to manage or dictate every aspect of your relationship, household, children, and especially your husband’s responsibilities

  • Often, we want more help from our partners but don’t realise that our controlling tendencies prevent them from stepping up

  • By trusting your husband’s decisions and giving him space to contribute, you'll invite more support and engagement from him

Confession – this one is the hardest for me!
Control makes me feel safe, but I’ve learned to trust my husband and his unique, wonderful way of doing things.

I remind myself with him and everyone else,
“There are many ways up the mountain!”

Be Vulnerable

  • Being vulnerable means opening your heart and letting yourself be seen emotionally

  • Sharing your true feelings, insecurities, and desires with your partner, even when it feels uncomfortable

  • It’s also about letting him comfort and support you, instead of always being strong or in control
